Role Group Celebrates National Apprenticeship Week 2021

Apprenticeship Week 2021

At Role Group, we support the recruitment and training of apprentices under one umbrella. We have a variety of positions available for apprentices on projects throughout the UK as well as having the ability to place our new recruits on our high-quality education programs within our training academy.

The recruitment and nurturing of apprentices is a particularly important step that the construction industry needs to make in order to close the gap on the current skills shortage. We need to attract new blood into the industry by appealing to all backgrounds, or we will face a struggle to meet the governments house building and infrastructure targets. Without new people, we run the risk of jeopardizing future projects, the integrity of our buildings and structures, and create challenges for the entire industry.

Recruitment

The Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) says the shortfall in the number of skilled construction workers in the UK is currently at its highest point since 2007. The RICS report further reveals that in order to meet future requirements, the industry needs to recruit more than 200,000 workers by the early 2020’s.

According to reports, the current workforce is too limited to meet the UK Government’s mid 2020s construction targets. There are several barriers that the construction industry can overcome by abiding by the following processes:

  1. Increase education

To ensure that the future workforce in construction is encouraged and engaged, we work closely with local schools and colleges to promote the industry to young people. This is usually done through career events and formal work experience programs to provide young people with first-hand experience of the industry.

  1. Invest in training

To shorten the skills gap within our own organization, we have implemented an in-house training program and use it as an opportunity to upskill our current workforce.

  1. Recruit workers from other industries

When considering our recruitment strategy, we feel it is important to think outside the box. If we consider other skilled workers such as ex-services personnel, we are dipping into a new talent pool of up to 14,000 former military personnel with a range of transferable skills.

  1. Address the gender disparities

We have previously acknowledged that there is a gender imbalance within our industry as construction has been historically viewed as a male-dominated industry. We work with female focused organizations and charities to support women, who are interested in starting a career in construction, with work experience and place them on training programs to help forge their career paths.

Training

At Role Group, we are passionate about training the next generation of skilled trades, competent managers, and renowned engineers to the highest standard. We work with our clients to promote and encourage educational and training projects within the construction industry, with a particular focus on apprenticeships and how to attract new recruits into the industry.

City & Guilds released a report which stipulated that 1 in 20 construction companies believe that there is a shortfall of skills within their own workforce. These companies are experiencing an overall shortage in skills that will impact how they tender and budget for future projects, incur project delays due to a shortage of skilled workers and result in them being unable to compete in the market. By investing in a structured and mutually beneficial apprenticeship program, these companies can educate, nurture and shape new recruits into the highly skilled and professional workforce they require in the future.
