Our year in brief: projects and training opportunities at ROLE

There’s no doubt that 2021 was a difficult year, but our team and employees rose to the challenge.  We supplied operatives for some headline-grabbing projects, like the innovative underground build at Battersea Power Station, and we achieved ISO accreditations in quality management, environmental impact and occupational health.  This year our head office moved, and we now have two dedicated training rooms with a capacity of 12 people.  2022, we’re glad to see you!

Projects in 2021

£2.2m: White City, London – This high-profile project, commissioned by Imperial College London, was run by Erith.  We recruited and supplied trades and labour (35 operatives in total).  It was a 2-year project which was successfully completed in March 2021.

£900,000: Southall Waterside, London – A decommissioned gas works is being transformed into five new neighbourhoods in the heart of Ealing.  The 88-acre site will have more than 3,500 apartments and a cosmopolitan urban heart.  Working with Walker Construction, Role Group supplied labour and tradespeople (15 operatives) in 2021 for this project.

Battersea Power Station, London – Beneath the Grade II listed power station, an awesome four-storey underground energy centre is being built.  For this project, managed by Careys, Role Group has supplied trades and labour – more than 10 operatives so far.  This project continues in 2022.

Thames Water – As construction partners for Thames Water’s AMP7 programme, Role Group provides tradespeople, on-site labour, traffic management and training.   During this 5-year cycle we’ve already provided more than 30 employees and the work continues.

ISO accreditation

In 2021 Role Group achieved ISO accreditations (ISO 9001, 14001, and 45001) demonstrating our commitment to quality management, environmental impact, and occupational health.

Why is ISO accreditation important?  It shows continuous development as we manage compliance.  We are dedicated to keeping our accreditation up-to-date and building a strong and resilient organisation.

Training and Traffic

In 2021 we created a dedicated Traffic Management division, which has enabled us to grow this area of work – something that we look forward to building during 2022.

Our training centre moved with our office and we now have dedicated training staff as well as swish new premises, so give us a call to discuss your requirements.

Training needs can be broadly grouped under two categories: compliance and progression.  Some of our training is mandatory for people in certain roles, such as safety training for Site Managers; but some is optional, and adds oomph to a CV.  Every year, it’s important to review progression and assess your skills for your current and desired role.

Here are some of the courses that we are running in 2022 – add our Course page to your favourites and keep an eye out for new dates:

Site Supervision Safety Training Scheme (Original / Refresher Course)

The Site Supervision Safety Training Scheme (SSTS) is essential for anyone with on-site supervisory responsibilities.  Our 2-day course covers your role and duties (including site inductions, safety, talks, risk assessments, and day-to-day safety monitoring) and gives you an understanding of Health and Safety legislation.  You will sit a short exam of 25 questions and when you pass, you will receive a certificate from CITB – valid for 5 years.  Full details on the SSTS are here.

If you took this course more than 5 years ago, it’s time for an update.  Our Refresher course is held over two days.  It’s a good way to get your knowledge up-to-date as we cover the latest updates in health and safety standards.  It’s vital to keep your training updated for compliance (and to keep you covered in case of accident).  This course includes a 25-question exam on the latest HSE standards, and will provide you with another 5-year certificate.  Find the SSTS Refresher Course here.

Personal Track Safety (Initial)

This course contains essential knowledge for anyone working on a National Rail site.  There are some entry criteria, including a drug test and basic literacy.  You will be asked to complete the PTS eLearning training and assessment first – this is an online module.  You will need to be registered by an employer or sponsor to undertake this course, which consists of 2 days at our training centre.  Read details here.

Emergency First Aid at Work

By law, employers must designate First Aiders, and this course is designed to provide the knowledge and skills for you to be an official First Aider.  The Level 3 Award is officially recognised, so it goes with you between workplaces – a valuable asset for future contracts.  The course covers emergency situations including choking, shock and minor injuries.  It’s conducted through practical assessments with a multiple-choice paper at the end.   Full details are here.

You can view our current course schedule here.

Adapting to COVID-19

No yearly round-up can go without a mention of the pandemic which rocked the whole world this past year.  In the construction industry, COVID-19 continued to cause delays and interruptions during 2021.

How did we react?  We adapted our working practices in line with government advice, asking employees to contact us immediately if they don’t feel safe at work – read our latest update here.
