Labourer

You can apply for this card if you have either:

• Passed the QCF Level One or SCQF Level 4 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment,
• Or hold a valid Site Safety Plus Health and Safety Awareness Course certificate
• Or complete the IOSH Working safely course.

All applicants must also pass the Operatives CITB Health Safety & Environment test.

This card is valid for five years.

Skilled Worker

You can apply for this card if you have either:

• Achieved a construction related NVQ or SVQ level 2
• Or Completed an employer sponsored apprenticeship which included the achievement of a City and Guilds of London Institute Craft Certificate.

If you do not have these qualifications, but you are experienced in your job and have registered for a qualification applicable to your occupation, you may apply for an Experienced Worker Card.

All applicants must pass the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test.

This card is valid for five years.

BLUE CARD – CRAFT UNIT LEVEL

This card is for occupations where a full construction related NVQ or SVQ does not exist, but you have passed trade specific units.

This card is valid for five years.

All applicants must pass the CITB Operatives Health, Safety and Environment test.

Apprentice

This card is available to people who are registered on a recognised apprenticeship framework.

This card is valid for four years and can not be renewed.

Applicants for this card do not need to take the CITB Health, Safety & Environment test if they have met their Apprenticeship Managing Agency’s health and safety requirements before applying for the card.

Experienced Technical, Supervisor or Manager

This card is available to Supervisors and Managers with on the job experience (normally at least one year in the last three) who have not achieved a construction related NVQ or SVQ level 3, 4 or 5 (or construction related QCF Level 6 or 7) and are not a member of an approved Professional Body.

The card is valid for three years and cannot be renewed.  It is issued on a temporary basis, while a Construction related NVQ or SVQ is being achieved. It is expected to be replaced by a skilled five year card on achievement of a Construction related NVQ or SVQ Level 3 or higher.

All applicants must be registered for the relevant Construction related NVQ or SVQ and have passed the CITB Health, Safety & Environment Test within the past two years.  For Supervisor occupations you should take the Supervisors test and for Manager occupations you should take the Managers and Professionals test.

Experienced Worker

This card is available to workers with on the job experience (normally at least one year in the last three).

The card is valid for one year and cannot be renewed.  It is issued on a temporary basis, while a Construction Related NVQ or SVQ is being achieved. It is expected to be replaced by a skilled five year card on achievement of a Construction Related NVQ or SVQ Level 2 or higher.

An Experienced Worker Card cannot be replaced by a Labourer or Provisional card.

All applicants must have passed the CITB Operatives Health, Safety & Environment Test within the past two years and be registered for the relevant Construction Related NVQ or SVQ.
Trainee (craft and operative)
This card is available if you are a trainee and are registered for an NVQ or SVQ (or if you are registered for or have achieved a Construction Award) but have not yet achieved an NVQ or SVQ.

This card is valid for three years and can not be renewed.

Prior to applying for the card applicants are required to have achieved either the CITB Health, safety and environment test at the relevant level for their occupation or have attended a 1-day Health and Safety Awareness Course (a copy of the certificate will be required with the application).

Trainee (technical, supervisory and management)

This card is available if you can provide evidence of current registration with a further/higher education college or university for a nationally recognised construction related qualification.

This card is valid for three years and can be renewed for a further three years on application.

All applicants must pass the CITB Operatives Health, Safety and Environment test.
Provisional
This card is for people who are:

working through probationary periods while employers assess their suitability for employment
undergoing supervised work experience (aged 16+)
working as a labourer but not yet completed a recognised qualification for a labourer card and not previously applied for a CSCS card

Applicants must have passed the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test within the past two years.

This card lasts for six months and is not renewable.  Before it expires Provisional card holders must achieve or be registered for a recognised construction related qualification and apply for the appropriate CSCS card for their job.

Advanced Craft/Supervisory

This card is available if you have either

achieved a Construction Related NVQ or SVQ level 3 or
you have completed an approved indentured apprenticeship (e.g.with NJCBI, BATJIC etc.) or
completed an employer sponsored apprenticeship which included the achievement of a City and Guilds of London Institute Advanced Craft Certificate.

This card is valid for five years.

All applicants must pass the CITB Health, Safety & Environment Test.  For Advanced Craft occupations you should take the Operative or the Specialist test depending what your occupation is.  For Supervisory occupations you should take the Supervisors test.

Manager

This card is available for manager occupations subject to:

• Achievement of a Construction related NVQ/SVQ levels 4, 5, (or Construction related QCF Level 6 or 7) in the relevant occupation

This card is valid for five years

All applicants must pass the CITB Managers and Professionals Health, Safety and Environment Test.

Academically Qualified Person

This card is available to people who have completed certain construction related degrees, HND’s, HNC’s, CIOB Certificates and NEBOSH diplomas. There is a list of the qualifications accepted here
