In April 2017, the government introduced the Apprenticeship Levy which is a monthly contribution that must be paid by employers with an annual pay bill of more than £3 million. The employers annual bill is all payments made to employees that are subject to Class 1 NIC such as wages, bonuses, and commission. Employers who are not connected to another company or charity will have an Apprenticeship Levy allowance of £15,000 each year. The allowance reduces the amount of Apprenticeship Levy you have to pay by £15,000 across the year.
Unfortunately, you cannot transfer any unused allowance over to the next tax year, making it imperative that the employer utilizes the full extent of the allowance. Without the right support, employers will find it difficult to fully take advantage of the levy and the allowance that has been allocated to them. Employers are now tasked with the requirement to set out a training plan, manage expectations and support the professional development of a high number of their staff.
In March 2019, the Open University revealed that a staggering £3 billion of levy funding remained unused and that only 19% of levy payers started new apprenticeships since the levy’s introduction.
